Matthew 10:39
He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.
To “find your life” refers to success or accomplishment or recognition in this life, or in this world; we call it fulfillment or realizing your dreams. In this case, the focus of everything is on self; being popular, making money, academic achievement, or the million and one other things that people pursue. But if we respond to Jesus when he says to us, “Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest,” then we die to self-promotion, and self-glorification; we are born from above, or born of the Spirit, and all things are new; all things are different. We fulfill the purpose of our creation by coming to know our Creator and Savior, and we truly find life; real life, now and for eternity. “Old things are passed away, behold, all things are become new. It is like the song, “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus”, Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in his wonderful face. And the things of earth, Will grow strangely dim, In the light of his glory and grace.
Commentary by Francis L. Harris
