1 Corinthians 2:5
That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
Life is brief and death is certain. We stand on a precipice and look down into the chasm of an endless eternity, and we are poised on the edge of that precipice. The only bridge that will successfully span this awesome gulf is the Cross of Christ. “In the cross of Christ I glory, towering o’er the wrecks of time”. I urge you to abandon the flimsy, specious belief systems that originate with man, for they are unsteady, faltering and insecure. No psychology, philosophy or belief system will span this void, regardless of how plausible they sound, or how eminent the person who teaches them. A dying atheist said, “My faith will do to live by, but it won’t do to die by”.
If I could persuade you to believe God by using skillful arguments and marvelous ideas, then your faith would stand in men’s reasoning or eloquence. We preach Christ and refer you to the Holy scriptures so that your faith is not anchored on shifting sands of carnal wisdom, but in the power of God. Go to the scriptures, for there is nothing like them; they teach Christ crucified, which is the wisdom and power of God. If you anchor in the scriptures, your faith stands in the power of God and not the wisdom of men.
Commentary by Francis L. Harris
